Real Estate Sensationalism - the Garbage Continues to Flow

Once again the local paper went a 'little' overboard with one of it's headlines.

It never seems to end.

Bold, attention-getting, negative statements help sell papers.

This morning's Palm Beach Post readers were hit in the face with: "Property Values Plummet in County".

The worst part is that so many people will never continue to read just a little further to see that the so called 'plummet' is only a 7% price drop.  Certainly not great, but hardly the hideous drop that the headline leads you to believe.

As far as I'm concerned garbage like this actually helps slow the recovery of the real estate market.

Why?  Because the press makes the situation seem horrible.  And they do it over and over and over.......

This results in the impression that all Florida real estate owners are desparate and ready to accept any unsupported low-ball offer.

In addition to the sensationalism, they also make generalized comments that obviously don't apply to all areas. If you average out what's happening in the ENTIRE County, yes, things are down.

But in several areas, such as Palm Beach, prices are actually going up!

Does that warrant a headline?  Absolutely not - it's buried in the middle of the article.

I certainly don't want the media to lie or sugar-coat the situation BUT balanced reporting would definitely be welcome for a change.
